  1. 01Primary authority: Appendix Graduate, GOV.UK Graduate visa guidance, Student sponsor reporting guidance, UKVI account guidance, and live fee/IHS tables
  2. 02Core rule: A Graduate visa application depends on eligible UK study, current Student or Tier 4 permission, sponsor completion reporting, and in-country filing.
  3. 03Documents: Current passport. Valid passport for the duration of the Graduate Route. If the passport expires before the Graduate Route visa would end, UKVI may grant a shorter validity period up to the passport expiry date. Renew the passport before applying if it is due to expire within the next 2 years.
  4. 04Timing: Apply inside the UK before Student permission expires and do not travel outside the Common Travel Area while the application is pending.
  5. 05Main risk: Applying before completion is reported. The Home Office checks your sponsor's database record. If the sponsor has not reported successful completion, the application is refused, even if you have physically graduated and received your degree certificate. The refusal may trigger a loss of the application fee and the IHS surcharge, as well as a negative immigration history. Confirm the report status with your university before applying.

The rule in plain English

A Graduate Route visa application depends on four requirements: eligible UK study (a degree-level qualification or equivalent from a recognised UK Higher Education Institution with a track record of compliance), current Student or Tier 4 permission that has not expired, sponsor completion reporting (the education provider must have reported the student's successful completion to UKVI before the application), and in-country filing (the applicant must be in the UK at the time of application). The application is made through the UKVI account system, not the standard visa application form. There is no requirement for a job offer, and there is no minimum salary or employment type restriction β€” Graduate Route holders can work in any role, including self-employment and freelance work.

The key distinction from the Student Route is that the Graduate Route is not linked to a sponsor in the same way. Your education provider reports completion, but they do not sponsor the Graduate Route visa. You manage your own UKVI account after the grant and are responsible for reporting changes to your circumstances (such as passport renewals, address changes, or contact details). The route is unsponsored, which means you are not tied to one employer and can change jobs, work multiple jobs, be self-employed, or take time off between roles without needing permission.

Duration depends on the application date. Non-doctoral grants: 2 years if applied for by December 31, 2026, reducing to 18 months from January 1, 2027. Doctoral grants: 3 years regardless of application date. The duration is a fixed period and cannot be extended. If you want to stay in the UK after the Graduate Route expires, you must switch to another immigration route (Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder, etc.). The Graduate Route does not lead directly to settlement and is not a path to indefinite leave to remain on its own β€” you must switch to another route that offers settlement before the Graduate Route expires.

Who this guide is for

International students in the UK who have completed an eligible UK degree and want to stay for post-study work. Students who are in their final year of study and planning their Graduate Route application timeline. Students who have completed their course but have not yet applied and are approaching their Student visa expiry date. Students with dependants who need to understand whether their dependants can join them on the Graduate Route. Graduate students completing a PhD who qualify for the 3-year doctoral grant.

This guide is also for recent graduates who have already received their Graduate Route visa and want to understand their new rights and obligations: what work they can do, whether they can travel, how to switch to a Skilled Worker visa, and what happens when the Graduate Route expires. If you are in your Graduate Route period, start planning your next immigration step early β€” the 2 years (or 18 months) goes quickly when you are building a career.

Documents and evidence to prepare

Current passport. Valid passport for the duration of the Graduate Route. If the passport expires before the Graduate Route visa would end, UKVI may grant a shorter validity period up to the passport expiry date. Renew the passport before applying if it is due to expire within the next 2 years.

BRP or eVisa access details. Current Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or eVisa account access details (UKVI account credentials). The Home Office is transitioning from physical BRPs to eVisas. If you only have an eVisa, ensure your UKVI account is set up and accessible before starting the application.

CAS details. The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number from your most recent course. This was provided by your education provider when you applied for your Student visa. If you cannot find it, contact your university's international student office β€” they can provide the CAS number.

Current Student visa details. Evidence that you hold valid Student or Tier 4 permission at the time of application. This is checked automatically by UKVI through their systems, but include the BRP or eVisa details in your application for completeness.

Completion report confirmation. Your education provider (sponsor) reports your successful completion to UKVI through the sponsor management system. The Home Office checks this record internally. You do not need to submit a separate document confirming completion β€” the system checks it. However, you should confirm with your university that they have submitted the completion report before you apply. Applying before the report is filed guarantees refusal.

Degree outcome evidence (if available). Degree certificate, final transcript, or official letter confirming award. While the Home Office checks completion through the sponsor system, having your own evidence of completion (degree certificate or transcript) is useful for your records and may be requested if the sponsor report is delayed or missing.

Timing, deadlines, and sequencing

Apply inside the UK before your Student permission expires. The application must be submitted and paid for while you are still in the UK with valid Student leave. If you leave the UK during the application process, the application is treated as withdrawn. If your Student visa expires before you apply, you must apply for a Student visa extension or leave the UK β€” you cannot apply for the Graduate Route after your Student status has lapsed without first regularising your leave.

The Graduate Route application cannot be submitted until your sponsor (education provider) has reported your successful course completion to UKVI. Confirm with your university that the report has been submitted before you apply. Some universities submit the report on results day; others wait until awards are confirmed. Check with your international student office when they expect to submit the completion report for your course.

Processing takes approximately 8 weeks from submission. You remain in the UK under the terms of your Student visa while the application is pending (section 3C protection), meaning you can stay, study, and (if your Student visa permitted it) work during processing. Do not travel outside the Common Travel Area while waiting for a decision β€” doing so will withdraw the application. After the Graduate Route is granted, the new permission starts from the date of the decision, not the date your Student visa expires.

How to make the file easier to approve

Check that the sponsor reported successful completion before filing. The most common Graduate Route refusal reason is applying before the sponsor's completion report has been submitted. Contact your university's international student office to confirm the report date. Do not rely on your degree certificate issue date β€” the sponsor report and degree award are separate processes. Some universities submit the report automatically on results day; others require a manual step. Confirm the status before paying the application fee.

Explain the 2026 to 2027 route-duration change clearly in your planning. If you apply before January 1, 2027, a non-doctoral graduate receives 2 years. If you apply on or after January 1, 2027, a non-doctoral graduate receives 18 months. The application date is the date you submit and pay the online application, not the date your course ends or the date of the biometric appointment. If you are graduating in late 2026, apply as early as possible within the allowable window (after completion is reported) to secure the longer duration.

Keep your UKVI account details safe and accessible. The Graduate Route is managed through the UKVI account system. After your visa is granted, you will use the account to prove your right to work, right to rent, and right to study. Store the login credentials securely and set up multi-factor authentication if available. If you lose access to your account, recovering it can delay your ability to demonstrate your immigration status to employers or landlords.

Document preparation and record keeping

Before you submit your Graduate Route application, ensure all official documents required are current and accessible. UKVI does not always request physical copies, but you should keep scanned copies of your passport, BRP or eVisa credentials, and CAS number in a secure folder organised by document type β€” this organisation is what allows you to produce the correct file quickly if an audit or verification request arises after your Graduate Route is granted. If you move to a new address, remember that updating documents with your university and UKVI is a legal requirement, not an administrative convenience. Some non-UK qualifications used to support your application may require document attestation from the issuing authority, especially if the awarding institution is outside the UK.

Maintaining your document file after the Graduate Route is granted is equally important. Store your UKVI account credentials, BRP or eVisa details, and any correspondence with the Home Office in a secure location. If your passport expires during your Graduate Route period, renew it promptly and update your UKVI account β€” failure to keep your immigration documents current can create problems when proving your right to work or rent.

What gets refused / common pitfalls

Applying before completion is reported.

Applying from outside the UK. The Graduate Route requires you to be in the UK with valid Student permission at the time of application. Applications made from outside the UK are invalid and will be refused. If you have left the UK after completing your studies, you cannot apply for the Graduate Route from abroad. You must return on valid Student permission (if it has not expired) and reapply from within the UK.

Travelling while the application is pending. Leaving the Common Travel Area (UK, Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands) while the application is pending withdraws the application. Even a short trip to Europe will void the application. Plan your travel to avoid any trips outside the CTA between the date of application submission and the date of the visa decision.

Assuming all dependants can be added. Only dependants who already held dependant status during your Student visa period can be included in your Graduate Route application. You cannot add new dependants at this stage. Children born during the Student visa period may be added. Partners or children who are newly joining your family after your Student visa expiry cannot apply as your dependant on the Graduate Route β€” they would need a separate visa pathway.

Missing the Student visa expiry deadline. If your Student visa expires before you submit the Graduate Route application, you cannot apply. You must submit the application before the expiry date shown on your BRP or eVisa. If you miss this deadline, your options are limited to: applying for a Student visa extension (if still enrolled), leaving the UK, or regularising your stay through an application from outside the UK. Set a reminder for the Student visa expiry date and submit the Graduate Route application at least 2-3 weeks before.

Frequently asked questions

When should I apply for the Graduate Route?+

Apply after your sponsor has reported your successful completion to the Home Office and before your Student visa expires. Do not apply before the sponsor report is submitted. Do not wait until the last week of your Student permission. The ideal window is the first 2-3 weeks after you confirm the completion report has been filed but while you still have at least 1 month of Student leave remaining.

Can I work while my Graduate Route application is pending?+

Yes, if your Student visa permitted work (which it does for most students) and you are within the working conditions of your Student visa. You can continue working under the terms of your Student permission while the application is pending (section 3C protection). Once the Graduate Route is granted, you switch to Graduate Route work conditions (no restrictions on type of work or hours).

How long does the Graduate Route last?+

Non-doctoral grants: 2 years if applied for by December 31, 2026; 18 months if applied for on or after January 1, 2027. Doctoral grants: 3 years regardless of application date. The duration is fixed and cannot be extended. Plan your next immigration step before the Graduate Route expires.

Can I switch from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa?+

Yes. The Graduate Route is a common bridge to Skilled Worker sponsorship. You can switch from within the UK without leaving. As a new entrant (switching from Graduate Route), you may qualify for a reduced salary threshold. The employer must hold a sponsor licence and assign a CoS before you can apply. Start looking for sponsored roles early in your Graduate Route period β€” the job search and CoS assignment process takes time.

Can my dependants join me on the Graduate Route?+

Dependants can only be included if they were already granted permission as your dependant during your Student visa period. You cannot add new dependants at the Graduate Route stage. Children born during your Student visa period may be added. Partners or children who are newly applying must wait until you switch to a different immigration route (Skilled Worker, etc.) before they can join.

What if I applied from outside the UK?+

The Graduate Route requires you to be in the UK with valid Student permission at the time of application. Applications made from outside the UK are invalid and will be refused. If you have left the UK, you must return on valid Student permission (if it has not expired) and reapply from inside the UK. If your Student permission has expired, you cannot apply for the Graduate Route.

What documents do I need to prepare?+

Current passport, BRP or eVisa access details, CAS number from your most recent course, Student visa details, confirmation from your university that the completion report has been submitted (not a document for the application β€” just for your own planning), dependant documents if applicable, and the application fee (GBP 822 as of 2026 β€” check live rates) and IHS surcharge payment.
