The rule in plain English
The Graduate Route lets international students who have successfully completed an eligible UK degree stay in the UK for post-study work. Non-doctoral grants last 2 years if applied for by December 31, 2026, reducing to 18 months from January 1, 2027. Doctoral grants last 3 years regardless of when applied. The route is unsponsored you do not need a job offer to apply.
Key requirement: Your education provider (sponsor) must have reported your successful completion to the Home Office before you apply. If they have not yet submitted the report, your application will be refused, even if you have physically graduated. The sponsor report is submitted electronically through the Home Office sponsor management system, and your university may have a specific process and timeline for submitting these reports after the results are finalised. Contact your university's international student support team to confirm when the report will be filed, because some institutions submit reports on a scheduled batch basis rather than individually for each student on the day their results are confirmed after the examination board meeting at the end of the academic term.
The Graduate Route offers significant flexibility compared to sponsored routes. There is no minimum salary requirement, no employer sponsorship, and no restriction on the type of work you can do. You can be employed, self-employed, freelance, work multiple jobs, or take time off between roles. The only restriction is that you cannot work as a professional sportsperson or doctor in training. This flexibility makes the Graduate Route a popular bridge to longer-term work visas, giving graduates time to find sponsored employment or build a business before switching to a different route. Graduates who intend to switch to the Skilled Worker route should use the Graduate Route period to secure a job offer from a licensed sponsor, because the Skilled Worker application requires a Certificate of Sponsorship from the new employer and the salary must meet the applicable threshold for the occupation code assigned to the role the graduate will be filling after the Graduate Route permission expires and the new Skilled Worker visa is granted by the Home Office.
Professional development opportunities on the Graduate Route
The Graduate Route offers significant professional development opportunities because it is an unsponsored visa with no restrictions on the type of work you can do. Use this flexibility to build your career through strategic employment choices: internships, contract roles, or self-employed projects that develop your skills portfolio. Many universities offer career services and job placement services that remain accessible to alumni for a period after graduation — leverage these resources to find roles that align with your long-term career plan.
Attend job fairs for students and industry networking events to build connections with employers who may sponsor Skilled Worker visas later. Graduate Route holders who actively use networking opportunities and mentorship programs during their post-study period are better positioned to find sponsored employment before the Graduate Route expires. Consider volunteering opportunities and part-time work in your field to build your UK professional network while you search for a sponsor. Treat the Graduate Route period as a bridge to build the professional experience and employer relationships needed for a successful Skilled Worker or Global Talent application.
Switching from Graduate Route to other visa categories
The Graduate Route is designed as a bridging visa, not a permanent immigration route. Most graduates will eventually switch to a Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder, or family visa. The Graduate Route does not lead directly to settlement time spent on the Graduate Route counts toward the 10-year long residence route to indefinite leave to remain, but not toward the 5-year Skilled Worker settlement clock. To qualify for settlement through the Skilled Worker route, you must first switch to a Skilled Worker visa and complete 5 years on that route, not counting the Graduate Route period toward the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain under the Skilled Worker category of the Immigration Rules.
The most common next step is the Skilled Worker visa, which requires a job offer from a licensed sponsor at or above the salary threshold. Graduates who switch from the Graduate Route to Skilled Worker are treated as new entrants for salary purposes, which means the applicable salary threshold is approximately 70% of the standard going rate. This new entrant discount is available for the first Skilled Worker grant and makes it significantly easier for recent graduates to qualify for sponsorship than experienced workers who do not qualify for the reduced threshold under the tradeable points system.
Who this guide is for
Students in the UK on Student or Tier 4 permission whose sponsor has reported successful completion to the Home Office and who want to work in the UK after graduation before switching to a Skilled Worker, Global Talent, or other work visa.
This guide is also for students who are approaching their final year of study and want to plan their Graduate Route application timeline. If you are in your final year, familiarise yourself with the requirements now: confirm that your course is eligible, check your course end date against your Student visa expiry date, and understand the sponsor completion reporting process at your university. Planning ahead reduces the stress of last-minute applications.
Who this guide is not for
- Students who have not yet completed their degree — you must finish the course first.
- Students whose sponsor has not reported completion — applying early is a guaranteed refusal.
- Students outside the UK — you must be in the UK with valid Student permission at the time of application.
- Short-term study visa holders — not eligible for the Graduate Route.
Timing, deadlines, and sequencing
Apply before your Student visa expires and after your sponsor has reported completion. Processing takes approximately 8 weeks (check current GOV.UK guidance). You cannot travel outside the Common Travel Area while the application is pending. The route duration depends on application date: 2 years if applied before January 1, 2027; 18 months if applied after.
Plan the application window carefully. The ideal window is after the sponsor completion report has been filed (confirm with your university) and at least 4 weeks before your Student visa expiry date. This gives you a buffer in case of processing delays. If you apply too late and the application is not decided before your Student visa expires, section 3C protection maintains your lawful status while the application is pending. However, you cannot add new dependants or travel during this period.
After the Graduate Route is granted, the new visa start date is the date of the decision, not the date your Student visa expired or the date you applied. This means your Graduate Route duration is counted from the decision date. Plan your next immigration step accordingly if you are switching to a Skilled Worker visa, the 2-year Graduate Route clock starts ticking from the decision date.
Documents and evidence to prepare
Current passport. Valid for the duration of the intended Graduate Route grant. If your passport is due to expire, renew it before applying to avoid a reduced grant period.
BRP or eVisa access details. Current Biometric Residence Permit (if you have a physical card) or your UKVI eVisa account credentials. If you have transitioned to an eVisa, ensure you can access your account before starting the application.
CAS details from your most recent course. The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number used for your Student visa application. Your university can provide this if you do not have it.
Current Student visa details. Confirmation that you hold valid Student permission at the time of application. The Home Office checks this automatically.
Completion report confirmation. The Home Office checks your sponsor's completion report internally. You do not need a document from the university for the application, but you should confirm with your university that the report has been submitted before you apply. Some universities submit this automatically on results day; others require a manual step.
Dependant documents (if applicable). If you have existing dependants who held dependant status during your Student visa, include their details in the application. New dependants cannot be added at this stage. Partners and children who were granted dependant permission during the Student visa period can be included in the Graduate Route application, but the relationship must still be genuine and ongoing at the time the application is submitted. Provide marriage certificates for partners and birth certificates for children as evidence of the continuing relationship for each dependant included in the application submitted to the Home Office for the Graduate Route visa.
What gets refused / common pitfalls
Applying before completion is reported. The Home Office checks your sponsor's database record. Applying before the report is filed guarantees refusal. Even if you have the degree certificate in hand, if the sponsor has not submitted the electronic report, the application will be refused. Confirm the report status with your university before you pay the application fee.
Applying from outside the UK. You must be in the UK with valid Student permission at the time of application. If you have completed your studies and left the UK, you cannot apply for the Graduate Route from abroad. You would need to return on valid Student permission if it has not expired, or explore other visa options from your home country.
Travelling while the application is pending. Leaving the Common Travel Area withdraws the application. This includes short trips to Europe, Ireland, or the Channel Islands. Do not travel until you have the visa decision. Even a day trip across the border will void the application and you will need to start over.
Assuming all dependants can be added. Only pre-existing dependants qualify. Dependants who held dependant status during your Student visa period can be included. New dependants partners or children who were not previously dependants cannot be added at the Graduate Route stage. They must wait until you switch to a different immigration route that permits new dependant applications.
Missing the 2027 duration change. Apply before January 1, 2027 to get the full 2-year grant (non-doctoral). If your course ends in late 2026, do not delay the application unnecessarily. Each month of delay before the 2027 deadline is a month of potential graduate work time lost. Apply as soon as your sponsor reports completion.
