One-sentence answer: a PGWP is a post-graduation work permit for eligible graduates of eligible Canadian programs, but it is not automatic just because a school accepted you or because the school appears on the DLI list.
Start here if
You are considering a Canadian program, already studying in Canada, or close to graduation and trying to understand whether you can work after finishing school.
This page is only the plain-English overview. The full decision page is PGWP eligibility in Canada, and the evidence page is the PGWP document checklist.
The practical answer
A PGWP decision starts before you graduate. The school, program, program length, study mode, field of study, and completion evidence all matter. The safest question to ask before paying tuition is not “Is this school a DLI?” The safer question is: “Does this exact program at this exact school support PGWP eligibility under current IRCC rules?”
For many students, the PGWP is the bridge between study and Canadian work experience. That work experience may later support a permanent-residence plan. That is why the eligibility check should happen before enrolment, not after graduation.
What documents usually matter
The PGWP packet usually depends on:
- Passport validity.
- Current or recent study permit status.
- Completion letter from the school.
- Final transcript or official marks.
- DLI/program eligibility evidence.
- Field-of-study/CIP-code evidence where IRCC requires it.
- Language-test evidence where IRCC requires it.
- Explanation for any leave, part-time term, transfer, or status gap.
Completion timing matters. The date on the completion letter or final transcript may start the application window, so do not wait casually after graduation.
What goes wrong most often
PGWP mistakes usually come from assumptions:
- Assuming every DLI program is PGWP-eligible.
- Assuming every private college program qualifies.
- Ignoring field-of-study rules until the end of the program.
- Letting the study permit expire without a plan.
- Filing after the post-completion window.
- Submitting completion evidence that does not clearly show the program is finished.
- Using a passport that expires before the full permit length the applicant could otherwise receive.

When to get help
Get a review if you changed schools, took a leave, studied part-time, moved from online to in-person study, enrolled in a private or public-private program, or are relying on a field-of-study rule. A good review should answer whether the program and timeline fit IRCC's current criteria; it should not simply reformat your documents.
Timing: when the PGWP clock actually starts
IRCC measures eligibility and application windows using completion evidence — often the date on a completion letter or final transcript, not the convocation ceremony. Waiting for a graduation party invitation before you request documents is a common way to lose weeks from a short filing window. Ask the registrar what they issue first (completion letter vs final transcript) and how long each takes.
Passport validity can cap the PGWP length you receive. If your passport expires in 14 months, do not expect a 3-year permit merely because the program length would otherwise support it. Renew the passport before filing when the math is obvious.
Study-mode and transfer landmines
Online study limits, transfers between schools, authorized leaves, and part-time terms can all affect PGWP eligibility even when each individual semester “felt fine” at the time. Keep enrollment letters and leave approvals. If you transferred from a private college pathway into a public institution, verify the current public-private partnership rules rather than relying on older student forums.
Field of study and CIP codes
Where IRCC applies field-of-study restrictions, the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code and the exact program name on your completion documents matter. Marketing program titles on a school website are not controlling. Confirm the code your school reports and keep a PDF of the program page as of your enrollment term if rules are in flux.
Relationship to permanent residence
A PGWP is temporary. Express Entry and many PNPs reward Canadian skilled work that often begins on a PGWP — but language scores, NOC/TEER mapping, and draw categories still decide invitations. Treat the PGWP as a bridge you must stay eligible for, not as a promise of PR.
