Not legal advice. Photo rules follow live USCIS and Department of State guidance. Your DSO remains the authority for OPT recommendations. Confirm the current Form I-765 instructions before you file.

In 60 seconds

  • Photos are commonly 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), taken within the last 6 months, plain white/off-white background.
  • No glasses in ordinary cases; no beauty filters / digital retouching.
  • Paper filing usually needs two identical prints; online filing follows myUSCIS upload rules.
  • Dorm-room clutter and shadows are a frequent RFE trigger — use a plain wall or professional booth.
  • Put the photo in a complete packet: OPT document checklist.

Why photo RFEs delay OPT EADs

USCIS can reject or RFE an I-765 when photos fail size, background, recency, or retouching rules. An otherwise complete OPT packet still stalls if the photo set is unusable. Treat photos as a controlled exhibit — not an afterthought selfie.

Paper vs online filing differences

Paper packets typically need two identical physical prints meeting the 2×2 specification. Online filings upload a digital image that must still meet composition rules and myUSCIS technical limits. Do not assume a phone portrait that looks fine on Instagram will pass — disable beauty mode and check background uniformity.

DIY phone tips (if you cannot reach a booth)

  • Face-level camera; neutral daylight; stand a few feet from a plain wall to reduce shadows.
  • Turn off beauty mode / portrait blur / face-smoothing.
  • Remove glasses unless a documented medical exception applies under current rules.
  • Crop to square only after composition is correct; do not stretch the image.
  • When in doubt, use a pharmacy or professional passport photo service.

If USCIS issues a photo RFE

Read the RFE deadline on the notice. Submit exactly what the officer requests, using conforming photos. Confirm current response instructions in the letter — do not invent lockbox addresses or fees from memory. Ask your DSO if school mailing guidance applies; seek licensed counsel if the RFE also questions status or eligibility.

Put the photo in a complete packet

A perfect photo cannot fix a wrong category code or an aged OPT I-20 recommendation. Assemble the full exhibit set with the free OPT document checklist. Plan dates with the OPT timeline calculator (2026): filing window, unemployment & cap-gap. For common packet RFEs, see 7 OPT packet mistakes that trigger RFEs (2026) when published.

Can I wear glasses in my I-765 OPT photo?

Ordinary guidance follows the Department of State glasses ban used across visa-style photos: no glasses except rare documented medical necessity. Confirm the live State photos page and current I-765 instructions before you shoot.

Are phone photos OK?

Only if they meet size, background, recency, expression, and unretouched rules and (for online filing) myUSCIS technical limits. Dorm clutter and filters are common failure modes. A professional booth is safer for most students.
